Have you installed any software recently?
Have you tried running antvirius and especially spyware? I dont know how good SpyCatcher is but AVG have a decent free spyware checker as well.

What did you remove? anti spyware shouldnt delete main files.
When you got into safe mode and ran software to check for spyware/viruses, did you manage to get your files off?

By going into safe mode and running this has helped you clean it out.
I got worried when you said you couldnt boot in safe mode.
Im glad your all okay now.
I suggest you backup your files onto a CD.
now with AVG installed, ensure it has auto update set on it. AVG spyware is manual update, unless u pay for it.
I trust AVG to be a good virus/spyware.
Never install more than one antivirus, but installing multiple spyware s/w is no problem.
Well I think your sorted now.
Good luck with it!
Note, CCleaner is a tool used to help clear your history plus check whats in the startup (useful for this kind of thing - as you may well of noticed)

Are you still having problems?

I have used this s/w 3 times and it works great each time. It can recover files from formatted disks.
Depending on how much you have written to this, it may be still possible to retrieve your files.
Still interested?
