I dont want the border effected though if I already have that defined. I just want it to push any content below or to the side away from the cell.

ok, then try using padding left
padding-left: 10px;
padding-left: 10px;

The padding effects the content on the inside of the cell, not the outside of the cell. From what I've read, border-spacing does not work in Internet Explorer.
I dont think there is a solution to this but I just want to see if someone can confirm that this can't be done.
