It is most of the time an invalid user/password information. Or your pop mail server requires SSL. Have you tried to change the setting for your POP3 mail server in your Outlook and check the "Requires SSL" checkbox? Do you use the correct port for your mail server? Standard is 110 but for example Gmail uses 993. You could try to start a telnet session to prove if you can connect. But some mail servers don't allow this. But it is worth a try. Open a command window (Start - Run - Enter "cmd") and type in telnet followed by servername i.e. pop.myserver.com followed by the port number i.e. 110 for example "telnet pop.myserver.com 110" Once you are connected type "USER youUserName" and hit enter then type in "PASS yourMailPassword" (Note: You won't see what you are typing, so be sure to type correctly!) and hit ENTER. If you get an error you might have a problem with your server account, if it works, you have a problem with your Outlook settings. Let us know how you get on Cheers Peter

Peter, Thanks for the suggestion, I am having the same problem, I used your test of the server account via telnet above and that worked fine. So if the problem is with my outlook, what should I check next? In my case, I have two e-mail accounts set up with my outlook account, they both have the same settings as far as I can tell, one works completely, the other one gives me the error message: ~Task 'mail.mchsi.com - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC90) : 'Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: s.'~ Without the ~ of course, I do keep getting the one same e-mail over and over again, while I am trying to get this resolved, I did go online to my internet provider and foward all e-mail from one account to the other. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Bob T

ok, that's good

any suggestions?
Time:: 16:17
There seems to be no communication or authentication issues which is what I was expecting to see. Try running outlook /cleanprofile from the run command.
Time:: 16:18
now this: Task 'mail.mchsi.com - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210E) : 'Your mailbox is temporarily unavailable because another e-mail message is being delivered to it or another mail application is accessing it. The server responded: -ERR [IN-USE] account busy (locked by another POP3 process)'
Time:: 16:19
then this: Task 'mail.mchsi.com - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC90) : 'Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: GENERATOR>'
Time:: 16:23
Here's the next thing to try: open the control panel and open the Mail icon. show profiles Add a new profile and name it anything (1) add your account settings return to the screen (1) and select the new profile name from the dropdown box and click OK. start microsoft outlook and test your settings.
Time:: 16:27
done, this is the new error message: Task 'mail.mchsi.com - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC90) : 'Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: private users.'

Some ISPs block access to other SMTP mail servers while connected via them. (They block TCP/IP port 25 except to their own SMTP mail server.) Does this problem happen if you connect using another ISP? here's a couple of microsoft articles, but I'm not entirely sure that's what you're experiencing: http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=82066... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/198704

I tried creating new groups with each email address in each group with the same results. I am not using Secure Password Authentication on either account. Both accounts have been working fine until today, I have used sytem restore, outlook repair and deleting and recreating the account causing trouble all with the same result. What is puzzleing is why one account works while the other does not. The only problem is with receiving mail not sending mail. Any other suggestions?
Time:: 16:46
I have no other isp to test with.
Time:: 16:51
Ok, what makes sense at this point is that there's an email sitting on the POP3 server that outlook might not like. I've seen this happen with even plain text emails. is there any web interface you can use to clear your inbox?
Time:: 16:56
I am an idiot, I discovered the problem, I had a crashed hard drive and was working with my e-mail online for about 10 days, after fixing my pc, I wanted my sent messages from when I was working online to be transfered to my outlook program on my fixed pc (I am a packrat when it comes to e-mail, I know its a problem) so while online I moved them from my sent folder to my inbox hoping that I would get them to my pc that way, evidently that was not a good idea, I went online and moved them back to the sent folder just as a shot in the dark and now the problem is gone, sorry to have wasted your time and I really appreciate all of your help.
Time:: 16:58
Ha, good one. I was just about to suggest that ha ha. good times bob.

Glad your laughing, I never get mad at myself when I discover that it was me all along. I hate when I discover that I caused the problem, but thats the way it usually is, I have been told that I know just enough to be dangerous. Hopefully, someone will discover this post and either get their problem fixed or at least have a good laugh at themselves and us. It has been fun working with you and thanks again for your help and patience.

error code 0x800ccc90 in outlook 2002 There is one other cause of this error code that I have not read about on any forums recently and that is if you surpass the size limit on your outlook 2002 pst file. Can't recall what the size limit is - something over 2gb. But if you do this then the symptoms are that you cannot send or receive and your emails queue up in your outbox folder while you keep on emailing obliviously. You cannot move them or delete them whatever you try, and unknown to you while this is going on those emails in the outbox that you think will not send; they are being sent over and over again. All of them. Its happened twice to me and recipients have received upward of 50 emails from me while I struggle to fix things up. The antidote? Work offline as soon as you suspect the problem so you halt the outward flow of emails. Reduce the number of emails in your folders saved in your pst file (normally all your std default folders). Go through and find large attachments first and delete. You could archive of course but once you've triggered this error then you cannot archive anything either. so you need to delete a hefty chunk of emails first, maybe 100-200mb or more and it may take a couple of restarts for outlook to resize the pst file or recognise the new size and free up the blockage. All of a sudden your outbox is empty and a sigh of relief escapes your mouth. Voila.

Here is what worked for me after Verizon wasted my time checking Outlook settings that never had changed. After that I noticed (via the web browser) that I had about 50 messages, but Outlook was only downloading about 15 before blowing up with the error. So I deleted that last downloadable e-mail and the one before and after it. After that the problem cleared up. Your ISP will make you go to your e-mail via a browser and send yourself a message. If it gets received by the server (as seen via browser), then they will say the server is fine and it is your outlook. In my case it seems to be a corrupted e-mail. Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC90) : 'Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP)

I kept getting the same message on Windows Mail. My ISP is AT&T. I went to my web mail on AT&T and found I had 1 email. I deleted it, problem solved. No more error messages on Windows Mail.
