external hard disk problem, not starting when i connect to the system , i removed when its working

Does the light flash when you connect it?

Have you tried another USB port?

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Select Disk Management. On the right side of the screen you should see the connected hard disks and your external hard disk is probably labelled Removable Storage. Do you see it?
