A process serving application pool 'xxxx' failed to respond to a ping

I see this message in my event viewer some times (IIS 6 on a windows server), but searching for info on it i can't really figure out how that "ping" is made or what the problem could be.
The thing is that the application pool is not crashing or anything, there just seems to be a little while that it's not responding to this "ping". checking the website log, it is serving requests though, so i can't really figure out what it means.
Can anybody explain how this "ping" is sent, is it like an internet ping? Does it use the network?
Anybody knows what it could mean?
