Choosing a content management system

I need a new content management system which allows me to run my website www.designsonproperty.co.uk . I need to be able to quickly build the new website, integrate bespoke solutions such as calculators, Q&A database, shopping cart, sell factsheets, e-booklets and books, run surveys and a several forms of newsletters. I also need to be able to take money on-line as well as over the phone.

Although I know what I want from a CMS, I don't know how to choose between them and need a checklist/guidelines so I can get this right first time around.

The first task is to create a wish list of all the functions you will need. I will take a wild guess and say you are using opencms now. http://www.cmsmatrix.org/ is where you can compare the CMS and create a bake off per se.
Once you have defined your needs and had the bakeoff then you have to think about what platform to run on and where the server will be located. For me I would use linux and get a virtual server online.

My personal choice would be joomla. There is are a massive number of pre-written components and modules. It has a simple yet incredibly powerful API to help you out when writing your own modules/components. It has a very elegant templating solution with thousands of templates that you can use and personalise. It is a PHP application so will run on both windows and linux servers. It is also OSS meaning free.

Some people who are much more intelligent than I am have setup a website to tell you why you should use joomla:

Hope this helps

I like drupal quite a lot, much more than mambo. But joomla is growing fast and there must be a reason...
