Im assuming they use the IP address. When someone visits your site, u will know their IP address.
Given a IP address, u can use something like tracert ( http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtec...) to find out where it came from. Given that info, u have a rough idea of where that person's ISP is.
Im afraid I dont know much more.

Yes, ok. Im right so far. I just checked the web to verify.
I came across this useful site which contains a IP address database.

So it seems u need to
1. get IP Address
2. convert to IP number
3. use database to pinpoint location

In terms of visualisation, they probably determine the location then use their flash movies or whatever to move to that location in their maps.
That seems a lot of work!
