How can dual boot be setup to boot from logical drive? WXP laptop with one drive need to run from D

To backup complete OS, I think I need to run from another system. My laptop has 1 drive, 2 partitions. I would like to copy the OS folders from C: to D: then boot from the D: drive and run complete backup of the C: drive with no files opened on the C: drive to block the backup. How is dual boot setup? Can dual boot work on the D: drive?
