I have a couple of basic questions I am reliably told that my organization has 12 unused fixed external IP addresses. I would like to use one to host a Web site on an internal server. First, where do I find these addresses? I've looked all through my netscreen firewall with no luck. Would they be on the network router, or listed with our Hosting company or our domain company? I have no idea. When I get the IP address, and attach it to the IIS Web site, how do I configure Netscreen to allow the outside world in?

You can to a website found here: http://www.ipchicken.com">http://www.ipchicken.com</a> and it will show you your external IP. It is very possible that this IP change ever once in awhile. If this is the case the your IP is known as a dynamic IP and you will have to either get a domain name or call your ISP and ask for a fixed IP address. If not, it will inadvertently change on you and you will no longer be able to access it from outside your network.

Another one I use normally is: http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/">http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/</a> This also works with some proxy servers. If you´re behind a proxy server, you might not get your real ip address, but the proxy servers ip address instead.

Sorry, but this is confusing! This is what I understand from your request: You work in a company and you want to put a web site on a server of this company. Right? This website should be accessible from the public. Yes? So your company has "existing unused IP addresses". What does this mean? Does your company have 12 unused IP addresses registered as a domain in the www? Because it is one thing to have IP addresses in a company network and to have them actually available in the www. If you now want to start a web server from scratch, you will have to register an IP address as an internet domain. I .e map 200.123.156.189 to MyCompany.com. Now here is the question. Does your company have 12 IP adresses registered with the Internet and do not use them? If you do a WHOIS query (i.e here http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/in...) and you type in i.e. QUOMON.COM, you will get the IP address 212.97.133.22. If you drill deeper, you will find a page where it lists the IP address range for this domain. NetRange: 212.0.0.0 - 212.255.255.255 But careful, I assume that for the QUOMON people this is the IP address range of their ISP, where they have hosted their webpage. If your company is hosting their own web servers, you should see the IP address range for your company. Well, that's as far as it gets, I believe! Because which IP addresses are actually used in this range is another question. You could use a tool such as IPPingTool (free at http://www.download.com/IP-Ping-tool/300...) and scan a range of IP addresses. The information you will get is, that the IP address doesn't reply! This can mean that it is not in use! But it can also mean, that the server is switched off or not connected to your network. Should you now use this IP address and the server comes back online, it will crash! Just a comment, a company, no matter how big, should have documentation about used IP addresses etc. One other thought, you should think about setting up your network dynamically instead of using fixed IP addresses. Cheers Peter
