I have a three year old Dell XPS, 2.8Ghz PC that came with a dell multimedia keyboard. When I first got my PC, I was able to reprogram a number of the function keys (aka hot keys) to other things to customize it for my needs. For example, the calculator key now starts "Quicken." I now realize that I can no longer remember how I did that. There does not seem to be any programs on my PC for performing this customization. I want to say there used to be program in the Control Panel for that, but not now. Dell help desk was no help. I'm not a newbie. How do I change these function key settings? Thanks. Here's my keyboard: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/ac...

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/ac... is mine. Could you get to that? The referenced software is not on my system. The article doesn't mention where to go get it; it's also not on any of my Dell disks.

I did some more searching, and found this link. Is this the proper utility for configuring my Dell multimedia keyboard? http://support.us.dell.com/support/downl...
Time:: 15:20
The one you found is for a "Dell Enhanced Performance USB Keyboard" I have found another one more suited to your keyboard title "Dell Enhanced Multimedia Keyboard" support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R44838&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=52860 The instructions are here: support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?docid=5C9444DA13B0427CB5CE5E5FD5343AE8&c=us&l=en&s=gen

There is a garbage semicolon at the beginning of the second line of the first link the semicolon before releaseid= Anyway I got there, from your link, looking for file R44838.exe at the Downloads search "Search by keyword or filename" on the right-side column

I finally found the proper file and it's already installed on my machine. But, when I click on the executable (mmkey.exe), it brings up the control panel for my Create Sound card instead of the Dell TouchKeys panel. I reinstalled it in a different folder with the same result. For some reason, it's grabbing my sound card controller instead of the keyboard one. I verified this with my Dell Resource CD as well; I have the right file....

Use RegEdit to open the registry and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey The subkeys here (on my Dell Enh Wireless KB) correspond to a subset of the 'programmable' keys. They are 15 - Mail, 16 - Musical notes/Ausio key which is by default runs mmkey.exe, but I just substituted wmplayer in the ShellExecute subkey to run MS media player, 17 - My computer, 18 Calc.exe, 7 - web browser. Hope this helps.

Interesting; my keys correspond pretty much the same as yours, but "mmkey.exe" brings up my Audigy sound card mixer controls and not the keyboard control as I think it's supposed to and used to. I've reinstalled the mmkey a couple of times from Dell's site, but nothing seems to fix it. Ideas?

How do I reassociate this mmkey to my keyboard controls? That seems to be the problem...
