not being cheeky here but are you sure you have connected the speakers to the right hole in your soundcard? Your soundcard also probably allows microphone plugin, u may of put it in there.
Have you verified that the speakers do indeed work? You can try them on another PC, one that isnt Windows Vista.
Could it be that you do not have the right sound drivers installed? What soundcard do you have? Have u checked the manufacturers website to see if its supported by Vista? perhaps there is an upgrade u need to install.
