I'll tell you right now that at least you're not hijacked since no malicious software I've heard of will take you the microsoft owned "live.com"
My gut tells me that somewhere along the line, some popup blocking software or firewall is denying logon scripts from live.com and causing you to fail logins. Note that hotmail is no longer hosted on hotmail.com but rather live.com hosts it. add "*.live.com" (without the quotes) to all of your safe site lists and you should be good to go.
