Yes, you do need to buy/purchase a domain name first. Next you need to have your domain "hosted" somewhere. This is where you will store all the computer code (like Java Scriptingor HTML, etc) and pictures or whatever you like on that server. I've been a webmaster for a few websites for the past several years, and it's very rewarding. I collect license plates for a hobby and thus started my own license plate collecting webpage back in 1999. There is a LOT of competition for website domain registration as well as hosting services. In many cases, you can get a "combined" package and save money by getting both. One company that I use and is very competitive is godaddy.com. Yahoo has it's own hosting service as well.
