Paid servers are easier to modify and can support more people than if your using a free server. Or you could pay for the world's fastest internet speed, a cloud storage service,. and other stuff seperately.
and in the minecraft paid server there are many perks like being able to forbid breaking and buildin blocks in a specified area, adding NPCs and making an "economy" of sorts where players can sell there items in exchange for points.
