I was reading a little bit online about this and it seems that the original web safe color pallet was designed for the 8 bit color monitors. Since most computer monitors can now display either 16 bit hi-color (65,536 colors), or 24 bit true-color (16,777,216 colors) many would say that it HAS become irrelevant.
