How do I open a file with the extension ".rar"?

I was sent a graphic file with the extension file.rar and I'm not really sure how to open it. Any idea on how to open it or convert it to something like a PDF or PSD?

.rar is a compressed file just as .zip
You need to download a program to uncompress it, I normally use Winrar.

but apparently it's not free anymore (I think it used to be)

Yeah, not willing to pay money.

I found a resource at

http://www.7-zip.org/

That allowed me to uncompress the files. Thank DP.
