Thanks, orionb. My machine runs windows xp.
I tried your tucows link, the Free RAW Viewer, but that was extremely slow in creating even thumbnails from the images and slowed my whole computer a lot, so quit that.
then I'm trying Total Image Converter, which works well, but is shareware, so the free version only supports converting 4 images at a time, then a popup asks for confirmation for the next 4. But the program does what I wanted and it seems very complete.
