The best way would be to reinstall the OS, using a valid software licence. Normally, the laptop should have the licence number with the official Microsoft sticker somewhere on it.

another possiblity if u have a CD, do what lprotti says or use the recovery console, reset administrator and try from there
if u dont have windows xp cd then your screwed. A password recovery service might be available but I dont know of one.

I know a simple way to reset windows password to blank when you forgot windows administrator password,it need not to reinstall windows OS,and wont loss any data,by using "Any Windows Password Recovery 3.0 ". Maybe this could help you.

I think you have to make a windows password reset disk with third part utility. Burn a boot CD with the program, and insert it into the problem computer and your password will be reset to “Blank”. You can download it from http://www.windowsloginrecovery.com

1. Free download from Windows Password Unlocker Official site .
2. Burn the image file onto an blank CD: Decompress the tools and note that there is an .ISO image file. Burn the image file onto an blank CD with the burner freely supported by Windows Password Unlocker Official site.
3.Insert the newly created CD into the locked computer and re-boot it from the CD drive.

Lost windows password is not a big problem .I realize an easy method to reset lost windows password, just need to produce a windows password reset bootable CD/DVD or USB flash drive to reset forgotten windows password,I have made a bootable USB flash generate using the tool Windows Password Seeker and reset my administrator password successfully.More information in http://www.passwordseeker.com

Forgot windows passwords is not a serious problem. I realize actually quite an easy way to recover lost windows logon password, just need to create a bootable disk or USB flash drive to reset forgotten windows password, I have made a bootable Dvd with the windows password tool and reset my administrator password successfully. Windows Password Reset 9.0
