My printer is hooked up by usb to desktop computer whichis connected to a router. I set the printer to share. I can see it in Network but cannot add it or connect to it. I get an access denied. My desktop is XP and laptop is VISTA if that matters I don't know. I can get online through the router and I can see files on the desktop.

Have you set up the security on the printer when you shared it? You have to allow a user to be able to print.
Under Network and Sharing Center the option"Printer Sharing" has to be enabled.
Under "Network Connections" "File and Printer Sharing for Windows Networks" has to be installed.
