while connected to the linksys router, go to the configuration page (usually 192.168.1.1)
you need to ensure the firewall will allow VPN connections. You also need to set up a VPN connection using the internet connection wizard from the computer connected to the linksys, we'll return to this step later (VPN1A). I assume the linksys machine is connecting to the 7404. For good measure, I recommend changing the router's local IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.X.1 where X isn't 1 or 0, you choose. the reason for this is because it must be different from the 7404's local settings (VPN1B). restart your PC after you've saved these changes (or simply do a release/renew for the IP addresses)
Now, I'm not too familiar with the 7404, but it sounds like it allows remote VPN connections to it. if this is the case, you need to do 3 things (VPN2A):
1. setup a user in the router for VPN access (PPTP) (VPN2B)
2. open the firewall for VPN access
3. enter the settings for DynDns
You should be able to do this from the 7404's config page. to find the config page, which is usually the gateway, go to the computer that's connected to the 7404.
from the start menu, select run. type in CMD and press enter.
in the black window, type in ipconfig /all and note the gateway.
you should see the ip address of the router, something like 192.168.0.1 or what ever just make sure that there's at least 1 number different in the first 3 groups, for example from VPN1B above, if the linksys is set to 192.168.1.1, then the 7404 can be 192.168.2.1 or 192.167.1.1 or even 1.1.1.1 (we call this being on different subnets)
type the gateway into internet explorer's address bar. (no www)
refer to the 7404's owner's manual if you're prompted for a username and password.
you'll have to search for the settings so you can complete the tasks from VPN2A.
using the network setup wizard for VPN1A
control panel->network connections->file->new connection
connect to the network at my workplace
do not dial a connection
name the thing anything you want
IP address, use the DyDns website, house1.dydns.org or whatever you chose.
username/password from VPN2B
that's it.
this allows you to communicate from one computer to another as though they both are connected to the same router, but there's one component missing, a terminal services connection. I'm not sure what your friend had in mind, probably a VNC server or something similar. I'm more of a purist and tend to avoid installing software. Do you have windows XP Pro? or XP Home? and we'll go from there.

also on this machine, make sure the current user has a password, or create a user with administrative privilages and have that profile password protected. Remote desktop will not allow logins with blank passwords.
lastly, right click on my computer and select properties.
go to the Remote tab and check the box "allow this computer to be controlled remotely" (don't confuse this with remote assistance)
now from the controller (your machine)
first connect with the VPN then open remote desktop and type in the ipaddress from [RDP1]
start->all programs->accessories->communications->remote desktop
