I've noticed from our tracking codes that a majority of people are using 1024 x 768 resolution. I would say that you should subtract a few pixels to accomate the left and the right. Try a 1000 pixel width.

I agree with texaspancake that if you're designing with screen resolution of 1024 pixels across in mind, you should substract some for borders and the vertical scrollbar.
I've found that 1000px may be just a couple of pixels too much, so now I choose 996 as my max.

I have made some website with wordpress taking 1000, you can follow it, o/w you can go for 1024, not an issue, you can, but 1000 will be more look and feel.
