In my own opinion, a content specific software are software that can access data directly from the source. Like accessing the contents of a text file. You just have to know the location of the file, then that's it. While field specific software are software that has to know the field first before accessing the field's content. Database contains rows which has different fields. So to access a field's contents, aside from the file name or database name, you also have to provide some parameters like username, password, etc. The parameters differs from different database types.
