I would agree with Johnab, Magento is a really good platform for e-commerce sites. But you should understand that you will definately need some customizations.
As for shopping cart, I would suggest http://amasty.com/ajax-shopping-cart.html. The extension is very flexible, full open source if you need (for example, I added some options to it with code). Here is also one nice feature I like most: after adding a product to shopping cart, a customer will see a popup with 2 options: either go to his shopping cart or continue shopping. The latter is very great as it lets users buy more at once without having to go back to the category, search for the next product, add it to cart and repeat these steps over and over again, that may be really annoyng!

I would recommend to use Magento. If you want to increase the efficiency of the shopping cart, then I would suggest to use Magento Ajax Cart. Ajax Cart will allow your potential customers to add, edit, & delete the items in the cart without any page reload. Customers can browse for more products in your store without any fear to lose the added items in the cart.
