you answered your own question. yes you can connect using usb. without usb then you need to buy a wireless router, setup a password then just connect your printer and laptop, no problem.
Decide on a budget and research on models. I have a linksys wrt54g for cable modem. Old but still good.
Also make sure what security protocols your printer supports.
The router comes with 4 ethernet ports most probably. You can place printer near router and connect via ethernet cable also.
