I'd say that means something like separate software components or applications that have been combined into one package.
But why do you want to know and what is the context of the question? If you provided that, it might be easier for us to help.

Hi miniwr, has this question been answered then? Answer from Anpanman looks good to me.
Here is another definiton (same really as that posted by Anpanman) I picked up sometime ago
A system in which separate programs perform separate functions with communication and data-passing between functional programs performing standardized I/O routines and a common data-base. Such systems allow flexibility in addition/revision/deletion of various processing functions without disrupting the entire system
I agree with Anpanman though, would like to know more about what u are after
