I think you have to make a windows password reset disk with third part utility. Burn a boot CD with the program, and insert it into the problem computer and your password will be reset to “Blank”, without losing any data and you needn't reinstall windows OS. This sounds pretty interesting. We used a similar software at my tech support job a few years ago. Called "Windows Password Key 8.0".
It works very prefect to regain your password .Also use boot CD/DVD.

If you've forgotten your Windows password and you're on a domain, you should contact your system administrator to reset your password. If you're not on a domain, you can reset your password by using a password reset disk or by using an administrator account.

I suggest you do not reinstall your Windows XP or take it to an computer expert for repair, it may cost you some time or result in losing data, or cost some money.

Several days ago, I forgot my windows vista administrator password. I solved my problem with the help of Windows Password Seeker. Option 1: If you can log on your laptop with an administrator level permission account, you can change the password following the steps:
1. Right-click Computer to select Manage.
2. In the coming Local Users and Groups screen, double-click Local Users and Groups, and then click Users.
3. Right-click the account that you need to reset the password for, and then click Set Password.
