If you are planning on upgrading the Operating System (I would reccomend Ubuntu) you will need to get the installation disc and boot from CD.

Your computer does not have enough RAM to run newer versions of Windows So that is why i Reccomend Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/download the installation process is near enough the same.
