You can always go open source but I would probably encourage you to choose a well supported SaaS solution, at the end of the day you may be better served and think you made a good decision years down the road.
Here are a couple that you may want to take a look at:
a) Answerbase is a good solution, well supported and a ton of settings that you can support on your platform. Check it out at www.answerbase.com
b) Shapado is another good solution, not as user friendly as Answerbase but still a very good solution to consider...so you'll want to take a look at that as well.
c) OSQA is something to consider as well, that is an open source solution.
