What exactly is the problem you are running into? Typical setup involves using an installation disc which will install the necessary drivers plus a few utility programs, then plugging the printer in (nowadays almost always a USB port) and powering the printer on, then Windows finishes the installation.

I have installed and uninstalled with the disc. and i have also gone to the add/remove programs and tried to get it to install there. I have received a new install disc from HP. The system tells me that "the specified port is unknown". I am installing via usb port. I have deleted the usb ports and rebooted and they all come back the same as they were. Why would the system tell me that the specified port is unknown? I have gone to HP site and downloaded the drivers from there also. and tried to install the drivers from a download... The printer seems to load all necessary components but will not communicate from the comp to the printer?????

As pathetic as it is, I finally solved the same problem by installing a new USB card.

Do your USB ports work with other items? It's always possible there is a hardware problem.
