Unfortunately you do not give much detail about the version of Windows running on your machine.
Here is what I would do. First I would like to know what actually is running on my machine. In order to do so, you should start the Task Manager. Do this when the machine is slow. You can start the task manager i.e. with a right mouse click in a free area of your status bar and select Task Manager. Then click on the Tab "Processes". You will see all the processes currently running. Click on the heading "CPU" TWICE and the display will show the processes which use most of the CPU at the top of the list. Try to identify the process which uses most CPU, (Except the system idle Process). You then know who is slowing down your system. If you do not know what this process is for, go to a site like i.e. http://www.processlibrary.com/ and enter the process name. You will then see exactly what this process is for.
So now you identified the process which is consuming your CPU time (You can do the same with the memory consumers). You can now make a decision what next steps to do. Different options here:
The process is a necessary process and you have to run it: Wellthen the only thing you can do is get more memory or a faster computer
The process is a process of an application which you installed recently: Then you can decide if you still need this application or if you can uninstall it.
The process is a malicious process: Then you should run your virus detector or get a new one
One more thing: At work we run CA Antivirus. This has a module called "Inotask.exe". This module has a bug which kicks in every time daylight saving changes and consumes all the CPU it can get! It has nothing to do with a virus etc. The simple solution we have to do is to restart the Virus job server and it is fixed. I only mention this to show you that it isn't always a virus which is causing some problems. Google is very useful tool in situations like this!
So before you start panicking and think you are virus infected and install even more software on your machine, which will then slow it down even more,do first some checks and get to know what is really going on!
Good luck!
Cheers
Peter

I downloaded Vast last night and it ran a system scan upon rebooting but when I came into work this morning it is still lagging.
PeterNZ:
I had looked at my processes before and it seems when I am doing nothing, like now, the System Idle Process is between 70-85 which is normal. But as soon as I start browsing around on the internet my iexpolre.exe and explore.exe are going to around 50-60 and when it really effects me is when I go into Thunderbird and it takes FOREVER to get a response in that program. Everytime I click on an email message it takes the CPU usage for thunderbird.exe and pumps it to about 85-90.
My problem is, usually the computer runs fine up until 5 days ago. Then it started to drag. It has happened in the past but when I run a antivirus scan it usually cleans it up but this time it didn't.
Any other suggestions?

Last week I started to run out of disk space on my computer so I ran a bunch of backups and then deleted about 3 gigs worth. So, for the last week I had 3.5 gigs of space left and life was grand besides a small computer. Well, after today I am back down to 150 Megs. This is not normal...Can anyone help me here?
Apr 11, 2007 - 02:17 AM
It was a virus and you can see it in the HiJackThis log above Here:
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [isamonitor.exe] C:\Program Files\VideoKeyCodec\isamonitor.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [pmsngr.exe] C:\Program Files\VideoKeyCodec\pmsngr.exe
The VideoKeyCodec is actually trojan software that I picked up while running video I guess. I did the following:
1) Ran "Spybot: Search and Destroy" software which found the Trojan
2) Ran "SmitFraudFix" to make sure all the components were gone
3) Ran my Antivirus just for giggles.
It has improved the situation drastically and although it is still lagging a bit, I can work on it again.

"No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they're new, they all seem to get slower over time." Microsoft claimed that on their technical forum(Windows 7 forum).
In fact, Windows built-in a lot of services and startup item start with system. So if you want a faster computer, you need to disable some of them first.
I saw an article before. It descripe how to make your windows faster.
