the easier it is to find your website, say by typing in help.com rather helponline.com has obvious advantages. If I had the domain name help.com I would be rich rich rich. because I could rent out parts of my website to anyone whose company would like to be listed on help.com
if I wanted to, I could even auction my help.com out to the highes bidder.
on godaddy.com I could have probably paid about $10/year for the domain name and at auction, it could go for well over $100,000.
so yes it could be rather lucrative.
what you're up against:
there are alot of companies/people whose sole purpose in life is to buy names that people would most likely want. they buy them in bulk and just sit on them, doing nothing until someone's willing to pay their price to either use or buy the website's name.

if you want to start your own blog go here: https://www.blogger.com/start
anyway, instead of the memorability of the website name, noteriety of the user/blogger/subject comes into play.
If you're well enough known the end result is an online version of a column in a newspaper or magazine. You simply want to generate hits. Afterwards, you can start selling out to anyone who wants their product to be associated with your fame, for a price. (notice how quomon sells some of its space on these forums? they get some bucks for that). Anyway, whatever you do, offer something someone would actually want to view and you'll be in good shape.

John Chow: http://www.johnchow.com/ - he's (in)famous partly because he's marketing was so aggressive he got banned by google, but he's still doing great (20.000$ a month).
Another is Shoemoney: http://www.shoemoney.com/ - he's doing even better than John Chow
There are also a lot of other bloggers that blog about how to make money on blogs and although it's not easy, if you pick the right theme and dedicate yourself to it, it's definitely possible.

If you doing this about 10 years ago, you may be include to the list of lucky person who generate money online. Nowadays, buy a high authority domain and simply put advertising on it is not as easy as its seem. Even you run a website with high content on it, chance to generate money from your site is lower if compared with offline general job. Moreover, you may just getting cents not dollars.
If you serious to try online based opportunity, try these option :
1. Selling things - You can start from Ebay, Amazon, or maybe craiglists to gain experiences. Consider to open your own ecommerce site if you want to expand your business.
2. Freelancing - Open account at elance and do your job from home, online.
Affiliate marketing is another option, but this is definitely not a job for newcomers.

Setting up a blog requires not much more than a basic publishing program, a server and software to track ad clicks. The hard part, though, is attracting enough eyeballs to make it worth someone's while to pay to advertise on your site.
To have any prayer of attracting large advertisers, sites need to attract at least 500,000 unique visitors per monthSadly, even if you do generate enough traffic, the "click-through" rates on ads tend to be quite low--in the neighborhood of one half of 1%.
Subscription-based models are even harder to crack. Unless your site fulfills an urgent need (for tangible investment ideas, a potential mate, etc.), users aren't likely to pay for the content.
One way to garner subscription revenue is to run a virtual marketplace. These sites collect by allowing buyers and sellers easy access to each other. Many of these marketplaces flamed out in the dot-com bust, but some persist. Mfg.com, for instance, matches equipment manufacturers with smaller component suppliers.
