Personalization in .NET can be as simple as selecting a color scheme or theme that a returning visitor would like to see when they come back. You might like red whereas I favor blue. .NET allows, typically through cookies, for a visitor to persist the selections between visits.
As for a simple example, it would be hard to show all the pieces since it involves several files in order to accomplish this.
