*put avi into windows movie maker, convert avi to wmv video files
*open windows movies maker and import converted wmv video into and edit it for output.

Use format factory to do the conversion. Free and easy to find in google.

At first, convert avi to wmv need a video converter tools to help you. Like me, I used to got U2Any Video Converter to help me. and it is very easy to use yet professional, and I can change my video to any format I need in few seconds. after you finish converting, you can put the wnv video to Windows Movie Maker for editing. You can use a avi to wmv converter to do that, the opearation is similar like this guide flv to wmv.
