Okay, your router comes with a hardware firewall and that is pretty secure. Zone Alert is software firewall - is this the one that is part of Zone Alarm? I had problems with Zone Alarm when I was using that, some crap about some vector. It was so frustrating so now I never recommend that. I consider it as bad as Norton - this is from my experience only. Zonealarm I found to be more intrusive also.
I use Sygate personal firewall, it is basic but pretty good. You can still download it although it is not officially supported anymore.
To test how good your security is, go to grc.com and test yourself using their shieldsup + other tools. This is what I use to test my security and its solid!!!
I know Im safe :)

We use zone alarm in our company (>25,000 people world wide) I connect through the DSL 604 T to the Internet and the VPN. Never had any problems!
Never trust a help desk guy! They tell you to shut off the firewall instead of trying to find the problem and configure the firewall properly!

As their are problems with Zone Alert, what Im suggesting to romander is to try a different software firewall, not get rid of one altogether.

If your connections were fine using just zone alert and prior to using d-link then adding a router shouldnt cause an issue, I would of thought.
Have you tried updating the firmware on the router?
Im looking at this which says zone alarm issues resolved

Always recommended to backup your router settings and get latest from d-link themselves.
I use linksys and its very easy to do the backing up and upgrading. No idea on the d-link though.

I didn't want to critizise your approach. I would try the same. Install a different firewall. At least then you know that ZoneAlarm is the culprit! I just wanted to say that there seems to be a way to run ZoneAlarm using the DSL G604T. The answer he got from dlink is typical. "It is not our fault. It must be some other third part software!" I hate this!
Let us know how you get on romander!
