Do you use any of the advanced features of the Realtek HD Audio Manager? If not, you can always disable that software (you will still retain the volume control through Vista, rather than the RHDAM). To do this do the following:
Click start, all programs, accessories, click on command prompt. At the prompt, type: msconfig
Then hit enter.
This will probably bring up a security warning. Click continue. On the 'system configuration' window that opened up, click the 'startup' tab. Scroll down until you see 'Realtek HD Audio Manager' or some variant of it. Uncheck it, and hit OK. Reboot your computer and it should be wrong.
NOTE: Please don't uncheck or change anything in the 'system configuration' program unless you're entirely comfortable and sure what the change will do.
ALSO NOTE: If this doesn't work or you would like to re-enable the RHDAM program, follow the same directions but instead of unchecking that box, check it and hit ok.

Thanks DiscoDave, that was a well explained solution.
However, before I read it, I had already discovered another:
1) Double click on the red speaker icon to open Realtek HD Audio Manager
2) Click on the "I" (for information) button in the bottom right hand side
3) Uncheck "Display icon in notification area"
(Who would have thought that there were settings inside the information/about window?)
Once the red speaker icon is gone, the plug-in/plug-out notification stops appearing too.
I still have the white speaker icon where volume can be controlled.
To open Realtek HD Audio Manager in the future, go to Windows Control Panel.
With this solution the Realtek audio features are still runnning which means that for instance the equalizer and other effects can be used.
If I hadn't found this option, I would have done as DiscoDave explains, therefore we will share the points :-)

I checked it out quickly on one of my machines looking for an option like that, but the version I had didn't have the option. Time to upgrade the driver, I guess. Good on ya for finding that. Thanks for the points.

1) Open Realtek HD Audio Manager, click on AudioI/O on the menu bar.
2) look for connector setting small circular 'knob'.
3) Click on it.
4) Uncheck 'Enable auto popup dialog, when device has been plugged in'.
5)Click OK.
6)Close the Manager.
7)Everything else remain where they are..............
Now I can play Jr Pacman full screen online on gagaplay.com and retain the NO.1 spot, without any annoyance from Mr. 'Jack'......plugged or unplugged..........(currently I'm in 2nd place)

Here's what fixed it on my Win10. Had to go to Systray to get the Realtek Audio Manager up and inside that control panel, I noted that the Mic screen kept appearing/disappearing when I was getting the notification. Turns out the webcam mic cable was a bit dicky and just had to twist it. Hope that helps future people.

You can disable removable notification in registry key.
